@ArthurF2023 I figured it out how to make it work with controller.
With steam (if you have other version add as a non steam game) go to your library then select the game and go to controller settings.
There you'll can map stuff to keyboard keys. What I did was use a button chord, so to activate the "E" I have to press LB + X button to open the trunk.
And the neat thing is that you can set any combination you want
